Victorian Egham Part 2

At the beginning of the 19th century, the population of Egham stood at 3,000.

Egham High Street has been home to everything from coal merchants, drapers, tea shops, saddlers, shoe makers and motor depots. As well as many shops and public houses, the High Street was home to a variety of town services, with banks, a post office, a fire and police station.

The 19th century was a time of great innovation and change. In 1856, Egham’s role as a coaching town was replaced by the arrival of the railway. This modern means of transportation brought an influx of visitors who associated the banks of the Thames at Runnymede as a place of leisure.
