Crafty Day at Home: Make your own bunting

Inspired by the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), we have put together some instructions to create your own bunting.

On 8 May 1945 people came together in the streets to celebrate the end of World War Two in Europe. Communities decorated their street parties with bunting and flags.

Why not make your own bunting to decorate your house or garden?

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Fabric or paper
  • Decorations (eg sequins, pencils, paint)
  • Ribbon or string
  • Glue or tape

We have also created a template for you to download. If you do not have a printer, you can draw a triangle on some paper or card.

Step 1: Cut out a triangle to use as a template.

Step 2: Find a piece at least 21cm x 60cm. An old pillowcase works well. If you don’t have any spare fabric, paper or card will work.

Step 3:  Draw around this triangle on the fabric or paper, aligning the point with the top.

Step 4: Flip the triangle on its short edge and draw around it again to form a diamond.

Step 5: Carefully cut the diamond out using scissors.

Step 6: Decorate the bottom of the diamond with a design of your choice.

Step 7: Rotate the fabric 180 degrees so the blank point is pointing towards you and decorate the other side of your bunting.

Step 8: Repeat until you have a few diamonds.

Step 9: Lay all of your completed diamonds decorated side down on the floor or table. Take on long piece of string or ribbon and lay it across the centre of the diamonds.

Step 10:  Fold the top section of each diamond over and secure using glue or tape.
