Heathrow invests in Magna Carta anniversary legacy

HeathrowEgham Museum is delighted to announce the award of a grant of £6,000 from Heathrow Airport to create a Magna Carta internship. The internship will be a 12 month placement in which a student will work closely with Egham Museum’s Curator, Dr Matthew Smith, to develop and deliver educational resources planned to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta in 2015.

As Dr Smith writes:

As a teaching museum we do all we can to create new and exciting opportunities for young people to gain experience and develop skills and so we are especially grateful for the support of Heathrow Airport in creating a Magna Carta internship. We are also delighted that as a result of this grant we will be able to deliver more educational resources, earlier than planned and across a larger geographical area, supporting local teachers and enhancing the learning of pupils.

Egham Museum has in development a broad range of cross-curricula digital resources that will be available from its website in three phases, in October 2014, January 2015 and May 2015. With resources available for Key Stages 1 to 5, exploring the history, legacy and contemporary relevance of Magna Carta, the museum hopes to inspire young people to explore more of the Great Charter’s story, to spark debate and creativity and to encourage young people to get involved in the various anniversary celebrations planned for 2015 and beyond.

Clare Harbord, Corporate Affairs Director, Heathrow Airport Ltd., writes:

Magna Carta, which was sealed very close to Heathrow in Runnymede by King John, is one of the most important documents in the history of the free world.  We are delighted to be further investing in the education and development of young people in the communities close to the airport by sponsoring a Magna Carta internship at Egham Museum.

The new intern will take up the post in October 2014.
