Historical Society celebrates its 50th anniversary

What was Egham like fifty years ago?  

What changes have taken place?  

Why was the Egham-by-Runnymede Historical Society (EbRHS) founded in 1967?

These are just some of the questions members of the Historical Society will be answering in the year of the society’s Golden Anniversary.  

Each month, society member Richard Williams, is taking readers of the society’s newsletter back fifty year.  These monthly reminiscences to 1967 investigate local events that were taking place as noted in editions of The Staines & Egham News (held in Egham Museum’s collection).  In January, we learnt about Railway Hotel, a fire at the refuse tip, and how much a 1967 Ford ‘Corsair’ would cost.  We are looking forward to February’s edition and what news it will uncover.

The Egham-by-Runnymede Historical Society are planning a number of events for their members throughout the year, but there are opportunities for others to get involved, too.  On Thursday April 27th, the monthly society talk will be “EbRHS 50 Years of Researching Local History” by Richard Williams, and is open to non-members for a small charge of £2.  come along and find out more about your local community’s history.
