Love, Egham

When was the last time you sent a postcard or wrote a letter to family or a friend? Perhaps in this digital age, you have sent an email or posted on social media? Egham Museum has, in its archives, many postcards sent to or from Egham, as well as letters acquired from its past residents showing us some of the correspondence in Egham.

One such example is a letter sent to Baron de Worms – head of a prominent family living at Milton Park, Egham. The Colonel and Mrs Naper wrote to Baron de Worms from Hyde Park, London, thanking him for their visit to Milton Park the previous day (DOC 2054).

Postcard to Miss Harris, sending the compliments of the season (P28)

Many postcards in the museum’s possession are also thank you notes – and not necessarily souvenirs of trips and holidays. One such postcard, with an Egham scene, sent in 1906 to a Miss Harris in Beaconsfield thanks her for her letter and sends “the compliments of the season” (P28); whilst another, with a view of Egham High Street, sends birthday wishes to the recipient in Egham (PC103A). Another postcard with a view of Egham asks about the sizing of clothes or shoes – but asks the recipient to reply by letter and not postcard, as they obviously do not trust their postie! (PC91)

We would love for you to get involved with the museum’s upcoming ‘Love, Egham’ exhibition which will explore the museum’s letter and postcard collection.

Did you grow up in Egham and move somewhere which reminds you of Egham in some way? Have you visited a city which also has a connection to the Magna Carta?

Send us a postcard about it!

We want to know about how other places you have visited, and are visiting this year, have a connection to or remind you of Egham. Take this chance to write a postcard as past residents of Egham did and contribute to this exhibition at the same time!
